SCD products need to have an “ activation “ process during which time chlorine dioxide is produced. This “ activation” process varies from product to product and typically makes a chlorine dioxide solution of 5% to 20% of that produced by a chlorine dioxide generator.
The benefit of the SCD products is that the customer can have the power of chlorine dioxide without the capital costs of a generator BUT they will be limited to treating water of maximum 100 000 litres per day. The limitation is purely economic.
SCD products are basically used for small water volumes.
The method of monitoring the resultant chlorine dioxide solution is fraught with mystic and confusion whilst the chlorine dioxide chemistry and the analysis thereof is fairly simple. Again it will be necessary to talk to companies that have a technology position in chlorine dioxide in order to explain the complexities of the monitoring of SCD products.
The latest powders / tablets to come from ENGLEHARD, their ASEPTROL range are readily soluble in water or moisture / humidity and produce a good quality of chlorine dioxide solution.

APPLICATIONS
Agriculture
The major application for our range of SAC liquid disinfectants based on chlorine dioxide is in agriculture primarily the post harvest washing of fruit, vegetables and flowers to increase shelf life and reduce food safety concerns.
We have also undertaken significant work in the “ hydroponics” industry in the treatment of the fertigated water and for sanitation applications.
- POST HARVEST APPLICATIONS
Washing of fruit / vegetables and flowers in dump tanks, high / low pressure spray baths, in tanks, in flumes or hydrocoolers. We have a specifically developed product for the washing of potatoes.
- HYDROPONICS
Treatment of the fertigated water; sanitation of trays / bags / media / equipment / personnel hands & footwear; sanitation of cold rooms; sanitation of wet walls; removal of biofilm and algae in drip lines / irrigation lines.
We supply our OXYSTIX HR strips to measure the SCD chlorine dioxide residual.
As indicated above there is a myriad of test procedures out in the market place and few if any of the companies using these analytical tools really know what they are measuring.
