Applications
Outlined below are the general applications for OXINE and Purogene in the Food Industry and in treatment of water::
Food Industry:
Food & Beverage
Chlorine Dioxide is gaining widespread usage, acceptance and approvals as a disinfectant / sanitiser in the food and
beverage sector.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) in collaboration with the FAO and CDC (Centre for Disease Control and Prevention)
have prepared a Food Safety Issues document in 1998 under the leadership of Dr Larry Beuchat on the University of
Georgia, wherein he evaluated the performance of all classes of disinfectants / sanitisers. Chlorine Dioxide holds up
against all other classes of products and more is known about chlorine dioxide than any other disinfectant / sanitiser
apart from chlorine. It meets all the HACCP food safety issues.
Campden and Chorleywood have produced their Guideline No 15 detailing the applications of chlorine dioxide in the food
industry as a substitute to chlorine.
Dr Ralph Tanner undertook a peer review study of all classes of disinfectants / sanitisers to evaluate the minimum inhibition
concentration required to show a log 5 hall in 60 seconds. Chlorine dioxide came out on top by a factor of 10 from the
nearest product. A table of his results is shown.
The applications for OXINE FP in the food and beverage industry are shown below :
- Sanitation of Hard Surfaces : 1 litre OXINE FP in 100 litres of water.
- Sanitation by Fogging : 250 ml OXINE FP in 5 litres of water.
- Treatment of Brine Water systems : Maintain a 5 ppm residual.
- Treament of Ice : Maintain a 20 ppm residual.
For Specific Applications eg.
- Breweries : Bottle Washing Rinse Water : Maintain a residual of 1 ppm.
- CIP / COP Circuits : Use 1 litre OXINE FP in 100 litres of CIP water.
- Pasteurisers / Cooling Towers : Maintain a 5 ppm residual.
- Chain Lube System : Use 1 litre OXINE FP in 100 litres of water to flush out the system.
- Yeast Washing / Rinsing : 2 - 4 litres OXINE FP per 1000 litrres of wash water.
- Process Water : Maintain a 0.5 ppm residual.
NOTES :
- For all applications where we have given the required quantity of OXINE FP in litres it is implied that the dosage is of "activated" solution. The make-up procedure for the "activated" solution is as follows :
- Step 1 - To 1 part of OXINE FP add 0.1 parts of ACTIVATOR PA. Allow a mixing time of 5 to 10 minutes. Undertake this step in a well ventilated area. A colour change will be seen where the "activating" solution goes from colourless to bright yellow / green.
- Step 2 - The "activated" solution must be diluted 1 : 10 with water to make a working solution which can be stored or added directly into the process water to be treated.
- For all applications where we have given a residual that is to be maintained , the quantity of OXINE FP and ACTIVATOR PA needed for individual process conditions can be calculated by either BTC Products or by one of their recognised Distributors.
Purogene In Water Treatment
We will briefly outline the range of applications for Chlorine Dioxide in water treatment and specifically focus on our products.
Click the on the link below to read a particular section:
Drinking Water ::
- Potable Water Plants - Chlorine Dioxide is approved world wide for use as a disinfectant in the treatment of potable drinking water. The main application are:
- Reduction in the formation of THM'S (trihalomethanes)
- Reductions in taste and odour problems
- Removal of manganese (black water) and iron (brown water)
- Eradication of cysts, cryptosporidium and giardia.
- Eradication of bacterial pathogens
- Long lasting residual in water distribution networks.
Typical dosage is 0.5 ppm to 5 ppm to achieve a residual in the water distribution system of 0.5 ppm. There are in excess of 10000 water plants in Europe and the USA relying on Chlorine Dioxide for disinfection control.
- Drinking Water:
- The farming community and rural areas can utilise OXINE WT at a level of 100ml OXINE WT per 1000 litres of water to ensure safe quality drinking water from bore-holes.
Where these communities have taste and odour problems OXINE WT is the solution. If you use Chlorine (gas or HTH) it will only make the taste and odour problem worse.
Process Water ::
The definition of "process" water covers any industrial / food production in which water is used. We will focus on effluant water, not only from sewerage plants, but from industrial production plants.
Water that is being treated and released within accordance of government legislation can have a 5 ppm residual of Chlorine Dioxide.
Cooling Water ::
Treatment of cooling towers with Chlorine Dioxide is mainly for microbiological and algal control by maintaining a 5ppm residual in the re-circulating water.
Hydrogen Sulphide Scavenger ::
Chlorine Dioxide is a very effective hydrogen sulphide scavenger whether the hydrogen sulphide is in the gaseous state or dissolved in water. It is also powerful scavenger of inorganic or organic sulphides. The industrial process which can cause the emission of hydrogen sulphide are:
- As a has
- Sewerage plants
- Rendering plants from chicken or meat abattoirs
- In pulp mills
- dissolved in water
- In sour water process in petro chemical plants and wash water from oil storage facilities
- In injection water used in treatment of oil wells
- MEA scrubbers from oil refineries.
Generally the requirement is 1 part Hydrogen Sulphide to 25 parts Chlorine Dioxide for complete removal. . We have various references for the usage of Chlorine Dioxide as a Hydrogen Sulphide scavenger eg the Brent Spar system.
- The major benefits of using Chlorine Dioxide as a Sulphidic Scavenger is that it can be used:
- in low temperature application (Brent Spar)
- in high temperatures max. 68-72 degrees centigrade
- it is non corrosive to equipment
- it does not form Chlorinate Hydrocarbons like chlorine
Cyanide Destruction ::
There are a number of established procedures used to detoxify cyanide wastes from electroplating shops or mining operations. These are:
- use of Chlorination
- use of Hydrogen peroxide
- use of air / sulphur dioxide (INCO process)
These processes are all pH sensitive and need to be operated at pH 10.5 - 11.5.
Chlorine Dioxide, although not widely well known has been successfully used for cyanide destruction due to the fact that it can undertake this reaction at any pH. Generally the pH is controlled between 9.5 - 10.5 to reduce the potential of gasification of hydrogen cyanide from hydrolysis.
Typically chlorine Dioxide is used at 2.5 - 4 parts to 1 part cyanide.
The capital expenditure of Chlorine Dioxide generators is continuously being reduced through the development of innovative equipment which reduces the "foot print" of the generator. Yields frequently run into 90% or more with the newer types of generators currently being developed.
Water Treatment::
Airline Water Treatment
PUROGENE is an extremely effective, broad-spectrum microbiocide for uses in airline water storage systems, potable water tanks, RV water tank systems and off-shore water storage systems. It is well documented that water tank systems can become contaminated with bacteria that can cause odor and taste problems, as well bacteria of human health concern particularly in geographic areas that have questionable municipal water disinfection procedures.
In the early 1980's, Boeing Corporation and Douglas Aircraft recognized problems with using chlorine in their on-board systems. Not only were taste and odor a significant source of customer complaints, but bacterial contamination, passenger health, corrosion and adverse chlorine reactions with system hoses were a recurring problem.
United Airlines and other carriers initiated tests using PUROGENE product in their onboard systems and ground disinfection procedures. They found that PUROGENE was more effective than hypochlorites in controlling bacteria and odors. PUROGENE does not react with system hoses, and all corrosion tests have shown acceptable performance.
Water Treatment::
Legionella Control
Powerful Disinfectant and Chlorine Dioxide Precursor for Smaller Users
Purogene is one of the most powerful and versatile disinfectants available in a can and can be substituted for most of today's commonly used disinfectants.
One of the main reasons for Purogene's success is its outstanding efficacy in dealing with Biofilm. Biofilm is the natural habitat for micro-organisms in all water systems, and on surfaces. Biofilm forms on surfaces in contact with fluids and effectively forms a layer of stagnant water on that surface. On dry surfaces, grease, dirt and other contaminants can shield biofilm from disinfectants. Removal of biofilm is the key to maintaining water system and surface hygiene.
Flexible and easy to use, PUROGENE can be substituted for any of today's commonly used disinfectants, but in particular where chlorine and hypochlorite are used. PUROGENE has become the disinfectant of choice for many Water Hygiene Service Companies for disinfecting hot and cold water storage and distribution systems in buildings, and is specified by many Local Authorities and NHS Hospitals.
PUROGENE has many approvals world-wide, a list of which can be found on the approvals page. In independent tests, PUROGENE outperformed all other disinfectants tested, and its superior efficacy in a wide range of tests proves that PUROGENE is truly a disinfectant for the 21st Century.
PUROGENE is a solution of stabilised chlorine dioxide held in a labile equilibrium complex. Chlorine dioxide may sound like one of the 'nasty' chlorinating compounds which are causing so much concern, but in actuality, PUROGENE reacts primarily through oxidation, not chlorination, which means that few if any chlorinated organic compounds like chloroform are produced.
Chlorine dioxide is one of the most powerful oxidants available in a can, second only to ozone, and has 10 times the oxidising power of chlorine in pre-oxidised water.
Water Treatment::
Disinfection Of Water Ciruits
PUROGENE, a product containing 2% (20,000 PPM) of Total Available Chlorine Dioxide (TACD) has become the disinfectant of choice for many in the Water System Hygiene business, and probably the most widely used source product for chlorine dioxide production for treating domestic hot and cold water systems for bacteriological control, whether in place of high hot water temperatures or for occasional on-line disinfection where fill & soak cannot be used.
